The Queensland Reds' TAFE at School program gives high school students in Years 10, 11, or 12 the opportunity to study rugby union coaching, and learn valuable transferable skills, while gaining a nationally recognised TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275) qualification while still completing their secondary schooling.

Throughout the 12-month course, students attend one of our partner sites one day per week, replacing a regular school day, to study a Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20321).

Successful completion of the Certificate II qualification contributes valuable QCE credits towards finishing Year 12, whilst students have the option of studying a Certificate III in Sport Coaching (SIS30521) course the following year.

The primary Reds program will run out of the BMS National Rugby Training Centre at Ballymore Stadium in Semester 1, 2026, whilst also having sites at TAFE Queensland’s Brackenridge campus and the Gold Coast.

The Reds invite interested students to attend an information session at the TAFE Queensland Open Day on Saturday, 2 August, held at the South Bank campus (66 Ernest Street, South Bank).

This session will be held in B Block, Room B1012 (Level 1) at 10:30am when TAFE staff will provide insights into what the program offers and how to get involved.

CAREER READY

Career Ready is a funding initiative from the Queensland Government that helps eligible students access training that supports their transition from school to work.

Under this funding, much like VETiS had been previously, TAFE Queensland can deliver the Certificate II in Sport Coaching at no cost to eligible students — making it a great opportunity for those pursuing careers in sports coaching.

The Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20321) is currently included on the proposed Career Ready funding list, which means eligible students may be able to access the year-long Queensland Reds program at no cost.

While TAFE Queensland is in the process of finalising its funding agreements for 2026, we welcome applications in the meantime.

Our Student Support team will be available to provide guidance on funding eligibility and next steps at the appropriate time.
