St Margaret Mary's Rule the Day as NQ Schoolgirls Super 7s Series Delivers Stunning Round 2

Monday 22 June 2026 | Mike Carney Toyota Park, TDRU, Townsville

North Queensland schoolgirls rugby sevens took another giant leap forward on Monday, with Round 2 of the NQ Schoolgirls Super 7s Series lighting up Mike Carney Toyota Park in a day packed with fast-running, hard-fought, and genuinely electric football.

With blue skies overhead and plenty of school spirit in the stands, the Townsville District Rugby Union venue buzzed with the energy of young women competing with everything they had — and the rugby on show absolutely lived up to the occasion.

Under 14s — St Margaret Mary's Claim the Silverware

The Under 14 competition featured four schools who have quickly made this series their own: Thuringowa State High School, St Patrick's College, Bowen State High School, and St Margaret Mary's College.

From the first whistle, it was clear that the intensity had lifted from Round 1. Teams showed sharp improvement across the board — smarter line-breaks, better defensive patterns, and a real understanding of the sevens game developing before everyone's eyes.

When the dust settled, it was St Margaret Mary's College who stood tall, claiming the Round 2 Under 14s title with a commanding 22–12 victory over Thuringowa State High School in the final. Thuringowa showed tremendous fight throughout the day and pushed hard right to the final buzzer, making for a contest that had spectators on their feet.

Under 16s — St Margaret Mary's Complete the Double

If the Under 14s final was exciting, the Under 16s competition turned the dial up even further. Townsville State High School, Bowen State High School, St Margaret Mary's College, and Thuringowa State High School all took to the field with purpose, producing a series of matches that showcased the genuine depth of talent emerging across the region.

St Margaret Mary's were in commanding form all day, combining pace, composure, and some brilliant team play. It was Thuringowa State High School who drew first blood in the final, showing exactly why they are a team on the rise — but St Margaret Mary's responded with authority, clicking through the gears to claim the Under 16s title with a 39–12 victory, completing an outstanding double on the day. Thuringowa's willingness to take the game on from the front was a real highlight, and they will be a genuine force to reckon with as the series continues.

Players of the Final

Individual brilliance shone through on a day full of outstanding team performances, with two St Margaret Mary's players taking home the well-deserved Player of the Final honours.

Under 14s Player of the Final — Cailin De Wet (St Margaret Mary's College) Cailin was a standout throughout the day, bringing energy, skill, and composure that belied her age. In the final against Thuringowa, she was instrumental in driving her team's 22–12 victory and thoroughly deserved her recognition as the best player on the park.

Under 16s Player of the Final — Madison Schell (St Margaret Mary's College) Madison was simply outstanding across the Under 16s competition, combining pace and footballing instinct in a way that had coaches and spectators talking all afternoon. Her performance in the 39–12 final win over Thuringowa was a masterclass in sevens rugby, and the award was a fitting tribute to a superb day's work.

Congratulations to both Cailin and Madison — two players who represent the very best of what this series is all about.

A Big Welcome to Townsville State High School

A special mention must go to Townsville State High School, who made their NQ Schoolgirls Super 7s Series debut in the Under 16s competition on Monday. Stepping onto the field for the very first time in this series, their players brought enthusiasm, courage, and a competitive spirit that made an immediate impression. The growth that comes from that first experience in a structured competition environment is invaluable, and the future is very bright for the Townsville SHS girls program. Welcome to the series — we can't wait to see more.

Hats Off to Bowen State High School

A heartfelt acknowledgement also goes to Bowen State High School, who once again made the trip from the Whitsundays to compete in both age groups. The commitment shown by the Bowen SHS students, coaches, and families in travelling to Townsville speaks volumes about their passion for the game. Their presence strengthens the series and their competitive spirit on the field adds enormously to the day.

The Village That Makes It Happen

Days like Monday don't happen without an incredible team of people working behind the scenes, and Round 2 was no exception.

Townsville District Rugby Union deserves enormous credit for hosting the series at Mike Carney Toyota Park — a fantastic venue that provided the perfect stage for these young athletes to shine. TDRU's ongoing commitment to growing the women's game in North Queensland is making a real and lasting difference.

The Townsville District Rugby Union Referees Association provided exceptional officiating across all games throughout the day. Their professionalism, encouragement, and support for the players created the ideal environment for schoolgirls rugby to thrive. Outstanding work from every referee involved.

And to Bodyfix Townsville — Physiotherapy & Performance Rehab, who served as game day medics and are a proud ongoing supporter of Townsville District Rugby Union — thank you. Their presence ensured that player welfare was front of mind all day, and the commitment Bodyfix brings to the local rugby community continues to be deeply appreciated.

A Series Going from Strength to Strength

The NQ Schoolgirls Super 7s Series is doing exactly what it was designed to do — creating real competition, building pathways, and giving young women in North Queensland the opportunity to fall in love with rugby sevens. With more rounds still to come and the Santos Q7s State Cup on the horizon, the ambitions for these players have never been greater.
