Queensland Rugby today named the Junior Gold Cup Queensland Under-15 and Under-17 teams that will compete against NSW, following the national finals this weekend.
The teams, who will compete against their interstate rivals in both age groups on Saturday 2 April, have been selected from the Queensland Junior Gold Cup teams that have played throughout the 2016 competition.
The Under-17 squad features a total of 10 players from the Brisbane City team who will this weekend take on Western Sydney in the National Junior Gold Cup final, as the curtain raiser to the St.George Queensland Reds vs NSW Waratahs Super Rugby match on Easter Sunday.
Both sides feature players from regional Queensland, including Cairns Brothers live-wire Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, who has been selected to take part in the Emerging Reds program following his performances for the Under-15 North Queensland team throughout the Junior Gold Cup.
Recruit Manager and former Queensland and Wallabies winger Paul Carozza, who is involved in the Reds Elite Development Pathway, believes the Queensland vs NSW fixture is an excellent finish to the Junior Gold Cup.
“The Junior Gold Cup provides players with the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best teenage Rugby talent in Australia,” Carozza said.
“The Queensland vs NSW fixture further adds to the development of the players, providing them with the chance to represent their state outside of Schoolboy Rugby.
“The long standing rivalry between Queensland and NSW dates back to 1882 and this representative fixture allows us to introduce players to the passion and intensity of the interstate match. It’s a perfect end to the competition.”
2015 Bond University Queensland Country National Rugby Championship (NRC) representative Tyrell Barker will coach the Under-15 Queensland side, while Lachlan Parkinson, who has a long history coaching Queensland Women’s Sevens and Schoolboy representative teams, will coach the Under-17 team. They are joined by coaches and managers whose potential has been identified throughout their involvement with their own Junior Gold Cup team.
The Queensland teams will travel to Sydney to play NSW on Saturday, 2 April. The matches will be played at Cranbrook Grammar School, with the Under-15s playing at 2:30pm and the Under-17s at 4:00pm AEDT.
All selected players are required to contact their respective Head Coach to confirm their availability by COB Thursday 24th March.
