Queensland Womens and Youth Girls Sevens star Lily Dick was recognised at the inaugural International Women’s Day Festival Youth Breakfast on the Gold Coast.

Dick was awarded the Youth Sports Leadership Award, recognition for her meteoric rise in Sevens throughout last year.

2016 was a breakout year for Dick.

She represented Queensland at a number of domestic and international events including the Hottest 7s tournament in Darwin and the inaugural Hokkaido Sevens in Japan.

Dick also helped Queensland claim two of five national Sevens titles.

She was part of the undefeated Queensland Red side that took out the National Women’s Sevens title in Adelaide in November, before captaining the Youth Girls Queensland side to the National Youth title in Perth.

She also spent time training with the Australian Sevens program, after catching the eye of national coach Tim Walsh.

Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) Women’s Sevens head coach Lachland Parkinson said: “It’s a great achievement for Lily to be recognised with an award like this.

“She is not only a great player, but also a great role model for younger girls in the game. She is also a great support for her teammates and an excellent example of Queensland’s Women’s Sevens pathway in action.

“Lily started out in our Gold Coast Youth Girls Development Program before graduating to our QAS Women’s Sevens Academy and has since gone on to represent her state and country. It’s been pleasing to see her off-field leadership and role model qualities recognised in receiving this award.

“It’s a great example of the growth and strength of Rugby Sevens in Queensland on International Women’s Day, during Queensland Women’s Week and ahead of our Ladies Round festivities at St.George Queensland Reds home game against the Crusaders this weekend.”

Dick was also part of the Australian Sevens Development team that competed at the Okinawa Invitational Sevens tournament in Japan earlier in 2017.

She will also be attending the first Australian Youth Commonwealth Games squad training camp next weekend in Sydney.

The International Women’s Day Festival is renowned as the most prestigious youth and women’s event on the Gold Coast, and the new Award program aims to acknowledge young women who demonstrate vision, commitment, inspiration, courage and leadership qualities un their school community and extra circular activities.
