Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) is proud to announce a suite of new initiatives to grow participation in Rugby Union, supported by the Queensland Government.
As part of this expansion, regions including Innisfail, Burdekin, Capricorn Coast, Fraser Coast, South Burnett and Goondiwindi will benefit from Play Rugby programs designed to introduce more children to the game.
The programs will include training and accreditation opportunities for coaches and match officials, enabling the delivery of inter-school carnivals at the primary school level.
Sports Minister Tim Mander today announced the Play Rugby program beside QRU Chief Executive David Hanham at Ballymore Stadium.
In 2024, Rugby Union in Queensland recorded more than 45,000 participants, with most engagement coming from secondary schools. Thanks to the support of the Queensland Government, new pathways are now available for primary-aged children to get active through Rugby Union in their schools, with clear links to continue their journey into community-based junior clubs.\
Minister Mander said the Play Rugby program would build on the excitement generated by the British and Irish Lions Tour.
“The British and Irish Lions only come to our shores every 12 years, so it is important to capitalise on the momentum they bring,” Minister Mander said.
“Kids across the state will be watching some of the best players in the game taking on the Reds and the Wallabies at Suncorp Stadium, and they will want to experience more of Rugby Union first-hand.
“The Play Rugby program will allow primary school kids to gain that experience and develop a greater love for the game that will ultimately see them being more active.”
QRU General Manager of Community Rugby, Gaven Head, highlighted the significance of this investment:
“We are excited to deliver our Play Rugby programs in communities and age groups that have not previously had access to these opportunities. Skill-based programs culminating in team-based Tri Tag (non-contact) or tackle competitions help foster a strong connection to community clubs.
"We see this support as a catalyst for sustainable growth in both school and club participation. We thank the Queensland Government for their backing and look forward to delivering these programs in the lead-up to the 2025 British and Irish Lions Tour and future global events.”
The QRU will showcase these initiatives through a series of activations leading up to Wednesday night's fixture between the Queensland Reds and the British and Irish Lions.
Highlights include today's open Queensland Reds training session at Ballymore, as well as involvement from local clubs in pre-game clinics, guard of honour activities, and halftime Tri Tag games.
