The Bowen Mudcrabs broke a 41-year drought in the Mackay District Rugby Union Grand Final over the weekend, defeating the Proserpine Whitsunday Raiders 25-22 to claim their first piece of silverware in four decades.

The Mudcrabs did it the hard way, trailing 24-13 with 20-minutes to play at Mackay’s BB Print Stadium as Proserpine Whitsunday looked to make it back-to-back A Grade premierships.

A try to Nick Poole in the 65th minute gave the Bowen side a sniff at a comeback victory, before Casper Turner iced the game with a pick and drive try in the dying seconds.

Poole converted to put the final score out to 25-22.

Kuttabul claimed the title in the region’s first Women’s competition, defeating Proserpine Whitsunday.
