The inaugural Gold Coast and District Rugby Union junior summer sevens competition kicks off this weekend, at Palm Beach Currumbin Rugby club.

Beginning on Saturday the 8th of October, the competition will be run for six weeks, with the aim of providing local juniors with the chance to experience sevens in a fun environment.

There will be age divisions from U10s through to U16s participating, with teams travelling from around the Gold Coast region as well as Far North NSW to take part.

Each team will play two to three games a week and competition points will be accumulated and a finals day held at the back end of the season.

Former England Rugby Sevens representative Ben Gollings, the first ever international Sevens player to score over 2000 points, will be involved in the competition coaching in the U14s.

“It is great to see a junior sevens competition start up on the Gold Coast. It’s a perfect way to allow players to enjoy a different style of Rugby and express themselves with the added space on field,” Golings said.

“I’m very excited to be coaching in the competition and we’ll have a big emphasis on providing a fun environment for the players and ensuring that the competition is an enjoyable experience.”

Rugby Sevens is one of the World’s fastest growing sports and with the Gold Medal success of the Australian Women’s Sevens team at the Rio Olympics, participation in the sport is only expected to rise.

The Gold Coast Junior Summer Sevens competition provides Gold Coast juniors with a chance to launch their Olympic dream, and with Australia’s best Rugby Sevens talent set to compete Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018, the region is set to become an epicenter of Rugby sevens attention.
