This Saturday, one of Queensland Country Rugby’s oldest affiliates, Mackay Rugby Union, will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a full day of festivities planned.
There will be junior matches played throughout the day at BB Print Stadium in Mackay, beginning at 9:00am, featuring Whitsunday Raiders and Mackay teams from Under 6s through to Under 14s.
The afternoon will see Girls Sevens matches played between local Mackay club and school players, as well as an Under 16s match.
The main game of the day at 3:00pm will see two teams, the All Stars and the Barbarians consisting of local senior club representatives as well as players from other Queensland Country regions, take each other on in the Crossley Cup Charity Match.
The Cup is named after local Mackay Rugby and Kuttabul Camelboks great, Andrew ‘Crozz’ Crossley, who unfortunately lost his battle with cancer at the age of 33 in 2010.
The match, organised by Crossley’s close friend Paul McNeill, has become an important fundraiser for the Cancer Council Queensland.
The jerseys worn by both teams will be auctioned off post-match with funds raised going to the Cancer Council.
Former two-time Rugby World Cup winning hooker Phil Kearns will be on hand to present jerseys to the players prior to the game, and will also talk at the special Black-tie Mackay Rugby 40-year anniversary dinner taking place at Magpies Sporting Club later that night.
