This Saturday Easts Rugby Club will play host to Round 1 of Rugby Australia’s Next Gen Sevens Series, which will see the Reds Women’s 7s go head-to-head with NSW.

The Reds Women’s 7s squad features 15 of the state’s rising young talents, and will be co-captained by Isabella Nasser and Kahli Henwood.

The side features a number of experienced Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) Women’s Sevens Academy players including Georgia Hannaway, Mackenzie Sadler and Melita Hicks, while recently named Queensland Reds Super W 2021 player’s player Melanie Wilks and vice-captain Ivania Wong will return from Wallaroos camp to pull on the Queensland jersey. Dual contracted athlete Heidi Dennis, who shares her time between Reds 7s and the Roar, will also be in action.

Reds High Performance Manager – 7s Reg Tayler said: “It’s been nearly 12 months since our athletes were able to compete as a Queensland side against teams from interstate.

“Due to the pandemic and the border closures that have been in place, it’s been a challenging two years for Sevens with the majority of competition taking place within our own state.

“We were able to see our players in action in the Queensland State 7s tournament last year, as well as in some internal trials against the Super W squad, and from that we’ve been able to provide opportunities for our athletes to play but to bring them together as a Queensland side and compete against NSW will be special.

“With the Commonwealth Games taking this place later this year and the 2024 Paris Olympics on the horizon, there is plenty for our women to play for as they compete for a potential call up to national duty with the Aussie 7s.”

The Reds Women’s 7s and NSW will compete in four games against NSW this Saturday, with the first game kicking off at 11:00am on David Wilson Field.
