Queensland Rugby launches 2026-30 Community Facilities Strategy

The Queensland Rugby Union has today unveiled its 20260-30 Community Facilities Strategy, providing a statewide roadmap to guide the future development of rugby facilities across Queensland.

The organisation’s second facilities strategy has been developed through extensive consultation with clubs, regional unions and key stakeholders, and outlines the infrastructure priorities needed to support the continued growth of community rugby while strengthening advocacy for investment in local facilities.

Importantly, the strategy is not a funding program or grant application process. Instead, it provides a clear and transparent framework to help align local facility aspirations with broader state and national planning priorities.

Queensland Rugby CEO David Hanham said the strategy will play an important role in supporting the long-term sustainability of community rugby.

“Community rugby clubs are the heartbeat of our game, and the facilities they operate from are critical to creating safe, inclusive and welcoming environments for players, volunteers and supporters,” he said.

“This strategy clearly communicates the infrastructure needs of rugby across Queensland, while also giving clubs and councils a practical framework to help guide future rugby facility planning.”

The strategy has been shaped through a comprehensive consultation process across the rugby community, including venue audits, club engagement and regional discussions with key stakeholders.

This process has helped identify a statewide pipeline of priority facility projects aimed at improving the quality, accessibility and sustainability of rugby venues.

Matt Horan, QRU’s General Manager of Government, said the strategy reflects the collective voice of the rugby community.

“Queensland is home to a passionate network of community rugby clubs, and ensuring they have access to quality facilities is vital to the future of the game,” Horan said.

“This strategy gives our clubs and partners a clear roadmap to help plan for the future while strengthening our ability to advocate for the investment needed across the state.”

The release of the strategy also aligns with the current Expressions of Interest for the Games On! program, delivered by the Queensland Government.

Projects identified within recognised state or national facility strategies are viewed favourably through the program, highlighting the importance of coordinated planning across the sport sector.

By identifying priority infrastructure projects and establishing a clear strategic framework, the strategy will help clubs and councils strengthen future funding applications and partnership opportunities.

The Community Facilities Strategy will continue to evolve over time, with project priorities reviewed regularly to ensure they reflect participation trends, planning readiness and emerging funding opportunities.

Queensland Rugby will continue working closely with clubs, councils and government partners to progress priority projects and deliver facilities that support participation, inclusion and growth across the state.
