Legendary Sevens star Dominique du Toit has announced she will retire at the end of the 2024 Olympics.

du Toit issued a statement on Monday confirming the Paris Games will be the final event of her decorated career.

The 27-year-old made her debut at the 2016 USA Sevens, with the Australian side taking out the tournament, before going to the Rio Olympics as an injury reserve.

From here, du Toit would play a major part in the continued success of the Sevens program.

She went to two Commonwealth Games, winning silver in 2018 and gold in 2022 whilst featuring at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

du Toit has also featured in all four of Australia’s World Series triumphs, most recently helping them to the title in Madrid earlier in the year.

“The last nine and half years have been nothing short of incredible,” she wrote in a statement.

“I have been lucky to play alongside some truly inspirational women who have both challenged me and helped me achieve what I thought would only ever be dreams.

“I will be forever grateful for the amazing opportunities, lifelong friendship and memories that this game has provided me with. I cannot wait to wear the green and gold with my teammates one last time on the world’s biggest stage.”

Coach Tim Walsh, who handed du Toit her debut, led the tributes for the icon of the Australian program.

“Dominique has had a tremendously successful career,” he said.

“She developed her trade through the 7s pathway winning a youth Olympic Gold medal in Nanjing. She debuted for the national team in Atlanta where the team was victorious. Her last HSBC World Series outing she bookended her World Series career with another win another Series title.

“Dom has entertained and excelled for nearly 10 years. She has displayed explosive speed and versatility to play multiple positions and kicked conversions and restarts.

“Whether she is stealing the ball in line out, soaring the altitude winning restarts as part of a pod, chopping defenders down or slicing through defence lines, the omnipresent Dom has been an integral contributor and a core player behind the women’s program’s decade of dominance.”
