Saturday 22 August, Toowoomba Stadium. Four grand finals, four sets of supporters who had travelled for them, and a season that came down to the last afternoon of rugby on the Darling Downs.
The conditions could not have been better scripted. Still, clear and mild, a surface that held up under four full matches, and the light coming in low and gold across the ground by the time the Risdon Cup kicked off. Grand final day rewards a good crowd and this one turned up early — the hill filling from the first fixture, the fence line packed by mid-afternoon, and club colours from Goondiwindi, Roma, St George, Dalby, Chinchilla, Condamine and Toowoomba all through the stands. That is what a regional competition looks like when it is healthy.
A Grade — Goondiwindi 38 def Roma 20. The Emus finished the job. Roma stayed in the fight and made them earn every point of it, but Goondiwindi found another gear and pulled clear to take the Risdon Cup — a record-breaking 17th title for the club.
The passage that decided it, though, was one where Goondiwindi did not score at all. Reduced to fourteen men for ten minutes, they faced a relentless Roma side that threw everything at them — phase after phase, repeat sets close to the line, the extra man swinging the ball wide and then coming straight back up the middle. That is a remarkable effort, and it says a great deal about the depth and consistency the club has built over decades.
Match officials: Ben Woods, Alex Biggs, Nick Maguire (QRU).
Women's — Condamine 46 def Toowoomba Rangers 10. The Coddettes were outstanding. They carried their form right through the finals series and produced their best rugby on the biggest day to take the Black Isuzu Cup. Rangers had earned their place in the decider and will be better for the experience. The women's competition on the Downs continues to be the best growth story in the region.
Match officials: Brad O'Hara, Gary King, Stewart Cameron.
B Grade — St George 29 def Goondiwindi 26. The game of the day. Three points at full time in a match that swung repeatedly, and a St George side that refused to be shaken when Goondiwindi came at them late. Grand finals like this are why people drive from Roma and St George and Chinchilla to be here.
Match officials: Tom Wallis, Nick Maguire, Michael Darvall.
C Grade — Dalby 10 def Chinchilla 7. A tight, arm-wrestling contest decided by a single score. Chinchilla can be proud of the day they gave the Wheatmen; Dalby found just enough in a match where field position and discipline mattered more than flair.
Match officials: Christiaan Van Der Nest, Stewart Cameron, Kobius Venter.
Ben Gardner and Caitlin Lamble at Downs Rugby — grand final day runs on months of work that nobody in the crowd ever sees: draws and appointments, ticketing, logistics, presentations, and the hundred decisions on the day that keep four matches running to time. It looked effortless, which is the surest sign it wasn't. Ben and Caitlin, thank you.
The Darling Downs Rugby Referees Association. Without them, there is no game — not a lesser game, no game at all. Every fixture on Saturday, and every fixture across the whole season, needed a referee and two assistant referees willing to stand in the middle of it while both sidelines scrutinised every call. A three-point grand final and a one-try grand final on the same afternoon ask more of officials than anyone in the crowd appreciates, and they were handled superbly. Thank you to every official who took an appointment this year — and if you have ever thought about picking up a whistle, the DDRRA would love to hear from you!
Every club and every coach. The standard of rugby on Saturday did not appear out of nowhere. It came from coaches at every club putting in weeknights and weekends, year after year, developing the talent that ended up on that field. That work is the reason this competition is worth watching.
Our volunteers, medical and first aid staff, ground crew, canteen and bar teams, managers, sponsors and families. The contribution is enormous and almost entirely unpaid. Thank you — this competition belongs to you.
Congratulations to Goondiwindi, St George, Dalby and Condamine. To everyone else: pre-season is closer than you think.
