The 2026 Sumo Energy Hospital Cup season has been fiercely competitive with teams across the competition ebbing and flowing in form.
Brothers have been the benchmark throughout the 2026 season, remaining atop the ladder on 47 points – 11 points clear of second place.
From there, just a bonus point win separates second from sixth, making the race for finals positions one of the more intriguing storylines of the season. Effectively, three spots up for grabs once clubs return from this weekend's bye.
Norths Eagles, who have been the biggest surprise of the season, sit at second on the ladder at 36 points after a mid-season wobble was corrected by a strong 43-31 win over University of Queensland last weekend.
Halfback Mosiah Christian has been huge for the Eagles and the strikepower of Reds squad fullback Will McCulloch from the back has been electric at times.
The Eagles' run home starts on July 4 against seventh-placed Souths and eighth-placed GPS. This is before they face their three other companions in the top four before ending their season with a bye.
While no game in the Hospital Cup is straightforward, victories against Souths and GPS would place the Eagles in a strong position to secure a finals spot for the first time in Will McCulloch's lifetime.
Easts, who defeated Norths by 34 points earlier this season, currently sit third on the ladder despite equal points with the Eagles (36).
The Tigers have won just one out of their last four games and are looking for a strong end to the season.
Following two weeks off, the Tigers face ladder leaders Brothers and fourth-placed Bond University before finishing with matches against Sunnybank Dragons and GPS.
Based on the run home, the race for second place potentially could come down to Easts v Norths on August 1 as the schedules of both teams remarkably mirror each other down the stretch.
Bond University's next three games are season-defining. The Bullsharks are facing the top three on the ladder in as many weeks. This isn’t to mention their last game being against a resurgent West Bulldogs who are currently their equal on points (34).
Bond has won just one of its four meetings against those sides this season. They will likely need at least three wins from their final five matches to cement a finals berth, with in-form sides University of Queensland and Wests looming in the rear-view mirror.
Now come the wildcards of the season.
West Bulldogs are unbeaten in their past four games and have picked up steam towards the back half with stalwart Connor Anderson back from Japan.
Wests next face GPS, before a crucial clash with fellow wildcard University of Queensland (31) on July 11. They play Bond on the last matchday. It's two games that could prove to be swing games and shape the finals race.
The team with the most favourable schedule heading into the back half, just based on ladder position, form, and home and away benefits is UQ.
The Red Heavies face GPS, Souths and Sunnybank in their remaining five games, who all sit below them on the ladder. Furthermore, out of the five games, three of them are at St Lucia, with two of them being against Wests and Brothers, who are above them on the ladder.
The run home promises plenty of intrigue, with even Souths, bolstered by the arrival of sharp attacking fullback David Bryenton, and GPS remaining in touching distance should they discover some consistency in form.
