A proud moment for First Nations rugby, with Indiana Burton becoming the only female match referee at the Queensland School Sport 11–12 Years Rugby Union State Championships.
Indiana was selected through the Queensland Representative School Sport (QRSS) Student Officials Program, providing an important opportunity to develop her skills as a match official.
Importantly, Indiana is also a First Nations female referee, breaking new ground and creating greater visibility for young First Nations girls across the game.
For Dylan Blackman, Queensland Rugby Union Indigenous Strategy Manager, creating opportunities for First Nations females to be involved in all areas of rugby is a key focus.
“Our goal is to ensure First Nations girls and women can see themselves across every part of rugby—not just as players, but as referees, coaches, leaders and future decision-makers.”
Indiana's achievement is a great example of what is possible when young people are given the opportunity, support and confidence to step into new roles.
