After claiming Super titles in 1992, ‘94 and ‘95, Queensland pulled off a remarkable season run to secure a home Grand Final for the first time, in 2011.
In early July, Queensland had 14 wins from 17 outings, including two victories in South Africa and a convincing defeat of the defending champions, the Northern Transvaal Bulls and a record seven-match win streak.
The only thing that stood between the Reds and another Super Rugby title was seven-time champions, Canterbury’s Crusaders, featuring All Black legends Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.
2011 had started for both Queensland and Canterbury with severe natural disasters, resulting in tragically high casualties and ongoing financial hardship.
The inspiring work that the devastating Queensland summer necessitated continued into the Reds’ Super Rugby season.
On July 9, Suncorp Stadium was at a record-breaking capacity for its first Super Rugby Grand Final.
The outcome was in the balance for much of the match, with moments of brilliance from both sides.
A swerving run 45m run from Digby Ioane put Queensland in front with 20 minutes to spare, before Dan Carter levelled the scores 13-13 with a booming penalty.
When Will Genia’s enterprising dart around a ruck turned into a stunning 60m individual try, the game was broken open.
The Reds survived the closing minutes leading 18-13 to again be crowned Super Rugby champions.
