Wallabies Tate McDermott and Tom Wright have traded the wing for front wings as the pair linked up with F1 team Haas ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

The pair toured the facility with British young gun Oli Bearman and Australian reserve driver Jack Doohan before the opening race of the 2026 season this weekend.

There's a unique connection with the Wallabies, with Doohan, who made his debut last year with Alphine, going to school with prop Zane Nonggorr on the Gold Coast.

The son of legendary motor-racing driver Mick shared his own Rugby experience of playing outside centre before turning his sole focus to karting and earning a spot on the Formula 1 grid.

"It's a little bit different but the same sort of keenness and pressure, I remember being a kid before rugby on Saturday morning, struggling to get to sleep and for the excitement and for the nerves," Doohan said to Wallabies Media.

"It's great meeting fellow Aussies, high performance athletes that are pushing towards the same goals, just in a different industry.

It was an educational moment for McDermott, learning how the cars get assembled on the day after their extensive travel days to get them from location to location.

"[I] learned a hell of a lot being first time in Formula One, meeting the Haas drivers," McDermott said.

"Terrific fellas, really appreciative that they spent time showing us around the garage, seeing them assemble the cars, and just sharing a couple of stories around footy and also Formula One driving.

"It was great to get amongst it."

For Wright, it was all about the milliseconds and micro-moments that separate success and failure.

"We think our game's made up of small margins, but even smaller in their department," he remarked.

"They were putting the carbon fibre underplate on the car and he was talking about microseconds on each little thing that are on their car. So, it was pretty phenomenal."
