A two-try blast in the opening minutes from centre Jeremiah Patea today ignited Queensland’s dominant 48-5 win over Western Australia at the Australian Schools & Junior Rugby Union Championships.

The Brisbane State High student had posted two tries inside 10 minutes for the Queensland 1 Open Boys at Sunshine Coast Stadium in the perfect playing conditions.

Patea was eye-catching. A neat pass to winger Brock Coombes also opened up the WA side for flanker Lane Edmonds’ long-range try as the first half unfolded.

The eight-try start to the ASJRU Championships will be a confidence booster ahead of meeting much stiffer opposition as the week progresses.

The Queensland 2 Open Boys struck tough opposition in their opening challenge.

Fullback Isaac Fidock scored a late try as they fell 59-12 to the NSW 2 Open Boys team.
