As Rugby gets underway across the State, Townsville is preparing to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
On the 22nd of April, Mike Carney Toyota park will play host to a carnival of Rugby, welcoming teams from the U19, women, senior and junior competitions.
As part of the celebration, the Townsville and District Rugby Union (TDRU) will be hosting a series of events, which will commemorate Rugby Union in Townsville over the last 50 years.
TDRU president Peter Cavallo stressed the importance of celebrating the milestone for the district.
“It’s extremely important for us. The game has been through its ups and downs and we’re now in a positon where we are able to celebrate milestones,” he said.
“It’s been a busy few weeks getting to this point, organising the draw for the upcoming season and preparing for the reunion.”
“It’s great to have the footy back and the reunion on the 22nd will make it all worth it.”
Established in 1968 the TDRU comprises of 2,000 registered players across the local junior and senior competitions.
The district encompasses the north coast area between Ingham in the north, the Burdekin to the South and Charters Towers to the West.
The district has strong representative Rugby programs with the Brolgas, who compete at first grade, women’s and U19’s in the seniors and U16 to U12 in the juniors.
Townsville’s best U18 schoolboy talent from various schools in the Townsville District were on show last week at the TSSS Trials.
The trials will see players earn selection in the Townsville squad that will attend the North Queensland trials next month.
The junior competition got underway last Friday, while the seniors will the seniors launch their season this weekend.
