The Brisbane Hustlers defeated the Sydney Convicts 22-10 to claim the 2017 Purchas cup in Melbourne on Saturday.
The Purchas Cup is an annual trans-Tasman gay Rugby championship which sees teams from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand compete for the trophy.
Brisbane Hustlers head coach Darren Hegarty said: “Winning the Purchas Cup over the weekend and being part of the tournament, with like-minded people, has been a very welcome escape," he said.
Earlier in the day the Hustlers knocked off the NZ Falcons RFC 21-5 to book their place in the Purchas Cup final.
Hustler’s captain JB Cousin accepted the trophy on Saturday night and said: “The absolutely amazing thing about this tournament is that we are driven to improve.
“To our competition, thank you for driving us to improve. I want you to come and try to take the cup again, and I want to take it off you, forever,” Cousin said.
The tournament is named after Andrew Purchas OAM, who is the co-founder of the Sydney Convicts RUFC.
Teams will now prepare for the 2018 Bingham Cup which will be held in Amsterdam next June.
The success is significant given Queensland Rugby Union's commitment through the gender strategy within its diversity pillar to ensure Rugby is a sport that can be enjoyed by all Queenslanders.
