GCTA FAQs
The Girls Can Tackle Anything (GCTA) program is designed specifically for girls aged 4–12 to learn rugby in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. The focus is on confidence, skills, friendships, and fun rather than competition. It’s her turf, her time!
Any girl between the ages of 4 and 12 is welcome. No previous rugby experience is needed — whether you’re brand new to sport or looking to try something different, this program is for you.
No. GCTA is a standalone program and doesn’t require girls to be part of a junior rugby club. If a participant decides she’d like to join a team later, we’ll help connect her with a local club.
The program develops:
- Rugby skills – passing, catching, kicking, tackling
- Confidence – building self-belief through sport
- Friendships – meeting other girls in a fun environment
- Fitness & fun – keeping active in a supportive setting
GCTA runs for a minimum of 6 weeks, with one session per week. Each session is around 60–90 minutes, depending on age group.
- Comfortable sportswear
- Joggers or football boots
- A water bottle
- A big smile and willingness to give it a go!
All other equipment (rugby balls, pads, cones, etc.) is provided.
Yes. Safety is a top priority. Coaches are accredited and deliver the program in a structured, age-appropriate way. Sessions use safe tackling techniques and modified contact to build confidence gradually.
Costs may vary by location. Please check with your local program provider for details.
You can register via Rugby Xplorer or through your local GCTA host club/school. Links will be provided in program promotions and social media.
Participants can:
- Continue with another GCTA block
- Join their local junior rugby club
- Explore school rugby opportunities
- Stay connected with the friends they’ve made
The program is designed to provide girls with a pathway — whether that’s continuing rugby socially, competitively, or simply enjoying the confidence they’ve gained.
Yes! We’re always looking for coaches who are passionate about helping young girls get started in rugby. Coaching resources and training are available, and female coaches are especially encouraged to join.
We welcome referees who want to gain experience in a supportive, fun environment. Match Official workshops and female-only referee courses are run regularly to help you get started.
Absolutely. GCTA relies on community support — from program coordinators and field managers to parent helpers. If you’d like to assist with administration, logistics, or event delivery, we’d love to hear from you.
Not necessarily. Many roles — such as assisting with registrations, field set-up, or event support — don’t require rugby knowledge. Training is provided where needed for coaching or officiating roles.
You can contact your local rugby club, school, or Queensland Rugby Union development officer to express your interest. Courses, workshops, and volunteer opportunities are promoted throughout the season.
