The Wallaroos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup despite a heavy 47-7 defeat to England.

Australia will face Canada next Sunday (AEST) in Bristol, advancing over the USA on points difference.

Jo Yapp’s side started strong in Brighton against the world number one team, scoring the opener and leading for the first half an hour.

But they were no match for the hosts when they got on a roll, blowing away the visitors with their clinical attack and brutal defence.

The forward pack scored England’s last six tries of the game to the delight of a sold-out home crowd of over 30,000 fans, including Princess of Wales Catherine Middleton watching on.

The Wallaroos entered the game with their quarter-final place all but sealed, but they weren’t content with simply managing the scoreline early.

An excellent scrum and 50/22 set the early pressure as hooker Adiana Talakai silenced the home crowd with the opening try.

England were quick to respond, with winger Jess Breach dotting down in her 50th.

But it was the Australians who enjoyed their fair share of chances in the first half as they held the English out on several occasions.

It came off the back of a super kicking game, with the visitors nailing three 50/22s.

However, the English defence proved too strong as they burnt the Wallaroos when they got inside the 22 late in the first half.

Second-rower Abbie Ward dived over from close, followed over by Sadia Kabeya at the back of the rolling maul for a 19-7 half-time lead.

This provided them with all the momentum to run away with the contest.

A sloppy mistake gifted Kabeya her second try of the game before a yellow card to Faitala Moleka for a high shot left them exposed for replacement Kelsey Clifford to strike.

Clifford crossed for a double to put the game well out of reach when fellow replacement Sarah Bern crossed with 15 minutes left.

It extends England’s winning streak to 29 games - tying their world record for most consecutive wins.

They can claim the record with victory over Scotland on Monday (AEST).

The only concerns for the English are the fitness of star prop Hannah Botterman, who limped off after 25 minutes, and fullback Ellie Kildunne, who will likely miss the quarter-final against Scotland with a concussion.

England 47 (Breach, Ward, Kabeya 2, Clifford 2, Bern tries; Harrison 6 cons) def Wallaroos 7 (Talakai try; Wood con)
