The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) are excited to announce the launch of a new Diploma program from 2024, in partnership with TAFE Queensland.

The program gives students the opportunity to study in a practical, hands-on learning environment, and gain real experience through work integrated learning facilitated by Queensland Rugby Union. This program is ideal for students passionate about rugby, looking for a pathway into the sports industry.

Students will study the Diploma of Sport over a one-year period with a specialisation in rugby union. The curriculum includes specialised units touching on high performance training, coaching techniques, and managing people and sporting events. Students will be introduced to sports development and discover how to design, deliver and manage a range of rugby activities including training sessions, junior activations, tournaments and competitions. Successful completion of the program will qualify you to work as a coach or sport development manager across a diverse range of settings.

Based at the National Rugby Training Centre at Ballymore (NRTC), students will have access to some of Queensland’s best rugby facilities, quality learning spaces, a high-performance strength and conditioning gym, and regularly engage with guest presenters from Queensland Rugby Union, the Reds and wider sports industry.

QRU State Development Manager Grant Dwyer said: “Queensland Rugby are looking forward to welcoming the newest cohort of aspiring young coaches and future sport development professionals to the National Rugy training Centre and Queensland rugby family. Participants will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and expert mentors, ensuring a comprehensive and dynamic learning experience for our Diploma students.

“We congratulate TAFE Queensland on developing the Academy of Sport Diploma program, tailored to meet the specific needs of students, will offer a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in an environment that provides a unique student experience with a tangible connection and insight to a world class sporting franchise”

Jesse O’Hara, TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport Manager said: “TAFE Queensland are proud to have built a strong relationship with the Queensland Rugby Union which has culminated in a 3-year embedded pathway.”

“The journey allows for students to commence their career in rugby during their final two years of high school during our TAFE at School program, followed by this new post-school diploma offering. The diploma program has the added benefit of providing credit towards a university degree for those graduates moving into higher education.”

TAFE Queensland’s diploma-to-degree pathways allows you to complete a diploma and bachelor degree in the time it usually takes to complete a degree alone. Completing this program will give you up to one-year of credit towards a number of degrees at a selection of partnered universities.

To find out more please register to attend the Queensland Rugby Union information session at 6pm Monday 21 August at the National Rugby Training Centre at Ballymore Stadium in Herston.
