Dynamic Wallabies backrower Seru Uru has been re-signed by the Queensland Reds for 2026 in an upbeat move, the Queensland Rugby Union announced today.

Uru’s direct, physical play, coupled with his versatile skills, have been a significant factor in the backrow or at lock in the Reds’ game style over the past two seasons.

He is one of the top offloading forwards in Super Rugby Pacific which complements attributes as a ball-carrier, ever-present support player, lineout winner and other skills he has sharpened.

Uru, 28, said signing on for a seventh season with the Reds in 2026 had always been his aim.

“I’m really happy to be sticking around at the Reds. I’m grateful and thankful because It has always been my intention,” Uru said.

“I started my professional rugby journey here and I’ve always called Ballymore home.

“It’s a such a special moment for me when I come into Ballymore each day and see my name on the locker in our dressing room. I see the names there of players I have great friendships with now and players who have moved on but are still important.”

Enhancing his balance of physicality and skill led to his influential Super Rugby performances of 2024 and recognition with a debut for the Wallabies.

He has built his weight from 102kg to 115kg, while part of the Reds program, to add impact to the dexterous ball-handling he translated from his junior basketball days as a youngster in Fiji. He has played 62 games in all for the Reds as Red No.1348.

“One thing I love about the coaching staff at the Reds is the way they encourage your skills. It’s ‘Choc’ (Zane Hilton) for lineouts, mauls and scrums. ‘Fish’ (Jonathan Fisher) helps with my breakdown and play around the park and Brad (Davis) has always pushed me with honest feedback to make the improvements I have in defence,” Uru said of the Reds assistant coaches.

“I’ve gained heaps of knowledge during my time at the Reds from past coaches and the current ones. I still have heaps to improve and that is one thing I enjoy because playing rugby is what I love to do.

“The coaches encourage me to play my game but I also know not to get carried away. You still have to stick to our game structures.”

Uru said talk about the imminent arrival of the British and Irish Lions was something for the future.

“It’s about playing well for the Reds first of all. It was always a dream for me to play for the Wallabies. I’ll keep working hard and if another opportunity comes I’ll take it with both my hands,” Uru added.

Reds Head Coach Les Kiss said Uru’s re-signing was a major plus.

“Seru is an important member of the Reds squad. He is a very skilful, impactful player who continues to work hard on his game. The versatility he brings as a backrower or lock is a great benefit,” Kiss said.
