QRU Seeking Expressions of Interest for Board and Committee Positions

SEEKING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) is seeking expressions of interest from appropriately skilled persons for the following appointments to be considered at the QRU’s upcoming General Meeting (12 March 2022):

  • Director on the QRU Board (up to 4); and,
  • Committee Member of the QRU Board Nominations Committee (up to 3).

QRU OVERVIEW

The QRU is the not-for-profit governing body for the Code of Rugby Union in Queensland and is governed by a Board of up to 9 Directors, most of whom are elected by Members.

Please note, QRU Directors and Committee Members are volunteers and are not remunerated.

The QRU has 27 Affiliate Members and represents the interests of more than 250,000 participants at over 200 clubs and 450 schools, including around 20,000 officials, administrators, and volunteers across the state.

The QRU is also responsible for the representative Rugby pathways which culminate in the professional Super Rugby team, the St. George Queensland Reds.

DIRECTOR VACANCIES

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Generally, Directors are selected to ensure the highest level of performance for the QRU, both in terms of operational performance and strong Corporate Governance practice. As such, Director candidates must have an understanding of Corporate Governance, Director’s duties and responsibilities.

The QRU welcomes applicants with a diversity of skills, backgrounds and experiences to bring to the table, including the representation of the diverse Membership of the QRU and of the wider Rugby community.

Specific skills across Directors:

  • Demonstrated interest in, knowledge of and commitment to the game of Rugby (Schools, Urban and / or Country);
  • Advocacy for the game of Rugby and the Rugby community;
  • Sound business judgement;
  • Absence of conflicts of interest or other legal impediments to serving on the Board;
  • Willingness to devote the required time to attend regular Board or committee meetings;
  • Good reputation, integrity, and leadership qualities;
  • High intelligence, with problem solving capabilities;
  • Team player, good communicator and capable spokesperson; and,
  • Possess relevant functional skills in one or more of the following areas:
  • i. Strategy and Risk Management;
  • ii. Finance & Accounting;
  • iii. Business and commercial management;
  • iv. Property Development and Commercial Leasing;
  • v. Rugby experience (including community Rugby);
  • vi. Executive sports industry leadership; vii. Legal and industrial relations; and,
  • viii. Marketing, media and digital communications.

In the current selection process, the following qualities will be highly regarded with respect to the current the Director vacancies:

  • Demonstrated capacity to engage with Government and Business networks for the benefit of the Rugby community; and,
  • Demonstrated property development / commercial leasing background.

BOARD NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE VACANCIES

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

The Board Nominations Committee Charter states that the Committee’s objectives are to assist the Board and Members of the QRU in fulfilling its corporate governance responsibilities, in particular Board appointments, re-elections and performance. As such, Board Nominations Committee Members must have:

  • A strong understanding of Corporate Governance as applied to a large complex sporting organisation;
  • A strong understanding of the interests of members of QRU;
  • Demonstrated ability to consult with members to reflect the interests of the rugby community in Board member selection; and,
  • Demonstrated skills in the discernment and selection of Board candidates.

HOW TO APPLY

Your expression of interest (or enquiry) should be submitted to the QRU Company Secretary, via CoSec@redsrugby.com.au by 5.00pm on Friday 28 January 2022.

It should contain:

i. A written application (no more than two pages) addressing why you would like to serve on the QRU Board or Board Nominations Committee, how you think your skills, attributes and/or experience will complement the continuing Directors and enhance the QRU’s ability to deliver on its strategic plan and the key and desirable criteria. This written application should also describe your current commitments, any perceived or actual conflicts of interest that relate to QRU.

ii. A current copy of your curriculum vitae (no more than two pages). Upon receipt of nominations, the selection process will be led by incumbent Members of the QRU Board Nominations Committee, currently consisting of both Directors and Member elected representatives, with a recommendation then proceeding to a vote of Members at the QRU’s upcoming General Meeting (12 March 2022).
