We’re thrilled you’ve chosen to join us as part of your Duke of Edinburgh's International Award journey. At Queensland Rugby, we’re here to support you alongside your local club, school, or referee association.
We are proud of our commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and fun environment for all match officials across Queensland. Through our Positive Behaviour Program, we aim to ensure that everyone has a rewarding experience both on and off the field.
Match officiating is a fantastic way to build leadership, communication, confidence, and resilience — all core qualities aligned with the Duke of Ed Framework. Whether you’re from a Rugby Union background or completely new to the game, we’re excited to have you join the team.
You’ll learn the fundamentals of match officiating and gain hands-on experience refereeing games in your local schools and clubs.
- Referee – Lead the game from the centre of the field, uphold the laws, ensure safety, and create an enjoyable experience for players.
- Assistant Referee – Support from the sidelines, manage touchline decisions, and assist with foul play and other responsibilities.
Education is key to your confidence and success as a match official. Queensland Rugby provides:
- On-field training sessions (weekly/monthly in various regions)
- Access to senior referees and mentors
- Support through your school or club
- Resources via the Rugby Xplorer Learning Centre
We encourage all Duke of Ed participants to attend training sessions — just like any of our other match officials.
A member of the Queensland Rugby team will contact you to discuss your officiating interests - whether you would like to become a referee or assistant referee.
- Head to Rugby Xplorer and register with your school or club.
- Go to the Learning Centre and search for the Referee Ready course in your region.
- Junior club competitions (U6–U10)
- School games (lower age grades)
You can become a match official in regions across Queensland:
- South East Queensland
- Darling Downs
- Wide Bay
- Capricornia
- Mackay
- Townsville
- Cairns
