The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) will expand its highly successful TAFE at School Program into new locations across Southeast Queensland.

The program, which was launched at Ballymore in 2023, provides senior high school students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel both on and off the Rugby field, while offering a clear pathway to employment in the sports industry.

The expanded program will offer students the opportunity to study a Certificate II and III in Sport Coaching with a specialisation in Rugby Inion. This hands-on curriculum equips students with the essential tools needed to pursue success in the sporting arena and beyond.

By focusing on coaching, participants gain valuable insights into team dynamics, strategy development, player management, and other crucial aspects of the game.

Upon the announcement of the program expansion, the QRU and TAFE Queensland expressed their enthusiasm for providing more opportunities across Southeast Queensland.

They emphasised the program's ability to cultivate industry talent, build character, and empower students to pursue their passion for rugby while setting the stage for future success.

QRU State Development Manager Grant Dwyer said: “Expanding the Queensland Rugby Union TAFE at School Program into new locations across Southeast Queensland is a testament to our commitment to nurturing our next generation of the rugby industry and providing holistic pathways to success.”

“We believe that this program not only prepares students for a career in the sports industry but also equips them with valuable life skills that extend far beyond the rugby field.”

TAFE Queensland’s Jesse O’Hara said: “Through this program, we aim to develop well-rounded individuals who are not only knowledgeable in Rugby but also possess the essential coaching and leadership skills required to excel in any future endeavour.”

“We are excited to see the program expand in an exciting period for Rugby in Queensland, with a host of international events on the horizon in the coming years,” O’Hara said.

Students commencing in Year 10 or 11 will have the chance to attend the program one day a week at various locations including Ballymore Stadium, South Pine Sports Complex, Gold Coast, or Logan.

This diversity of locations ensures that students from a wide range of Southeast Queensland communities can access the program while continuing their regular schooling. Over the course of two years, participants will attend the Rugby specific learning environment one day per week in place of a regular school day.

Students can contribute up to eight Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credits and contribute to their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), by completing the two-year program.

Applications for the 2024 Queensland Rugby Union at School Program open 9am Monday 17 July. To apply, visit tafeapply.com and use code TQB24SPORT.

Interested students commencing in year 10 or 11 are encouraged to submit their applications promptly to secure a place in this highly sought-after program. The program will commence in term 1 of 2024, allowing students ample time to prepare for this transformative educational experience.
