GPS 1st XV Wrap Round 5 - Three teams positioned as Premiership frontrunners

Nudgee continued their winnings ways in Round 5 of the GPS 1st XV Rugby competition beating Brisbane Grammar School 38-16 in wet conditions at Nudgee’s Ross Oval.

Both teams came into this game having lost only once with a second defeat this season ultimately putting an end to their prospective premierships chances.

Scrumhalf Ned Madden scored a brilliant individual try in the first half to help put Grammar in the lead.

Their fullback Ben Mooney was on target with his penalty kicks only missing one shot at goal in the first forty to give BGS a 13-12 lead at the break.

However the dominance of the Nudgee forward pack showed in the second half to swing momentum back in their favour.

Hooker Wil Rogers scored another hat-trick with all three coming off the back of powerful rolling mauls for the home side.

Nudgee scored four unanswered tries in the second half including a breakaway try to captain Patrick Dallimore to seal the 22-point victory.

Elsewhere, The Southport School defeated Brisbane Boys College 41-10 in a clinical performance away from home.

The TSS backline was extremely impressive accounting for five of the team’s tries.

The visitors had two outstanding tries that went the length of the field with the first going to winger Blake Raymond, who beat a total of four players to score.

The second going to captain Jye Gray who caught an offload on his own 22-metre line before showing off his speed to sprint past two BBC defenders who were standing back in coverage.

The game was played as part of BBC’s annual Indigenous Round, with the BBC 1st XV side playing in a jersey designed by a student.

TSS prop Caleb Laifoo, who hails from Thursday Island, and BBC indigenous fullback Daniel Malum received the Dane Gagai Trophyfor their respective sides.

Each school's headmaster selected an opposing player to be awarded the as the best player on ground - Gagai was an Indigenous boarder at BBC from 2004-2008 who captained their 1st XV.

In Toowoomba, Anglican Church Grammar School beat Toowoomba Grammar 22-18 in a tight contest out west.

Churchie scored the first try of the first half when lock Ben Daniels found himself through the Toowoomba defensive line in the opposition 22 before throwing an offload over the top of a defender to flyhalf Charlie Johnstone to score.

TGS responded straight away with a try from a rolling maul to leave the scores at 8-10 at halftime.

Both teams scored one more try before the final minutes of the game to have Toowoomba in the lead at 18-15.

However fullback Will Herbert broke Toowoomba hearts as he dived over for a try in the final four minutes of the game to seal the win for Churchie and keep them in the premiership hunt.

While in the final game of the round, Ipswich Grammar beat Brisbane State High 33-17.

Both teams were evenly matched throughout the opening half with the scores close at 14-10 in Ipswich’s favour.

IGS's centre pairing of Stanley Huen and Israel Leota were standouts throughout the game, combining to break through the State High defensive line multiple times with Leota scoring a try.
