Round 10 of BLK Queensland Premier Rugby kicks-off this weekend, with matches spread across Saturday and Sunday as we pass the half-way point of the 2016 season.
This week’s game of the round will see Souths host University of Queensland at Chipsy Wood Oval on Saturday afternoon. As both teams finished as the top two sides after Round 9, they will this weekend contest the Welsby Cup, named after Thomas Welsby, who was part of the first ever Queensland Rugby side in 1882.
Welsby was also influential in the formation of the Queensland Rugby Union in 1883, serving as the first Treasurer and Secretary, before being appointed as a Life Member in 1928 and serving as President from 1929 to 1939.
Easts will also host Bond University at David Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon. Sunday will see Norths take on Brothers at Hugh Courtney Oval in the second edition of the north-side battle for 2016, while Sunnybank will travel to Yoku Road to face GPS.

Souths v University of Queensland
Location: Chipsy Wood Oval
Kick-off: Saturday 3:20pm
Souths host University of Queensland at Chipsy Wood Oval this weekend, with the two top teams competing for the Welsby Cup. Sitting just one point apart on the table, both sides have forgotten what it’s like to lose in recent weeks. University haven’t lost since Souths surprised them 30-20 at home in Round 1, whilst the Magpies have won four in a row since going down to Brothers in Round 5. With Souths undefeated at home in 2016, the Red Heavies are faced with a tough assignment in the Round 10 BLK Queensland Premier Rugby Match of the Round.
Souths: Markus Vanzati, Maille Nguamo, Eric Teofilo, Matt Bennett, Isireli Naisarani, Simana Halaifonua, Anton Mineko, Johnny Kalauta, Scott Malolua, Teti Tela, Mika Tela, Paul Brown, Levi Aumua, Ralph Evalu, Kyle Blackman
Coach: Brett Picone
University of Queensland: Pat Fepuleai, Tonga Ma’afu, Rebuen Leilua, Pat Morrey, Phil Potgeiter, Conor Mitchell, Jack de Guigand, Jack Cornelsen, Scott Gale, James Dalgleish, Jock Campbell, Nathan Russell, Josh Birch, Clifton Setu, Tom Banks
Coach: Mick Heenan
Easts v Bond University
Location: David Wilson Field
Kick-off: Saturday 3:20pm
Easts will be disappointed with last week’s result after leading Brothers 8-0 at half-time. A number of errors late in the match proved costly as Brothers ran away with the victory in the second half. They’ll be out for retribution against a confident Bond University outfit, who last week secured their third victory of the year with a 22-16 win over Wests. Wests are faced with the bye in Round 10, so a win for Easts at David Wilson Field will see the Tigers climb off the bottom of the ladder for the first time in 2016.
Easts: Pettowa Paraka, Sam Richards, AJ Campbell, Tyrell Barker, Tevita Momoka, Ben Radmall, Tom Milosevic, Henry Olsen, Simon Gregg, James May, Max Quigley, Matt Gordon, Sean Cox, David Skelton, Shane Parkinson
Coach: Anthony Connellan
Bond University: Robbie Moe, Nick Turner, Sam Clifton, Sam Fattal, Milton Sikuea, Jake Upfield, Callum McDonald, Josh Fuimaono, Vitori Buatava, Scott Daruda, Gus Qasevakatini, Joel Rapana, Brad Jones, Waylen Skipps, Mitch Third
Coach: Sean Hedger
GPS v Sunnybank
Location: Yoku Road
Kick-off: Sunday 3:00pm
GPS will be hungry to narrow the gap between their current fifth place standing and the top four, as the Gallopers host Sunnybank at Yoku Road. Currently sitting seven points behind the fourth placed Dragons, Jeeps can start their campaign to play finals Rugby in 2016 with a win this Saturday. Despite going down in Round 9, GPS will be confident after they pushed the top-of-the-table Red Heavies last weekend, with only a late penalty securing the 27-24 victory for University. After a lackluster display back in Round 8, Sunnybank had the luxury of the bye last week and should be fresh for this tough encounter against a hungry GPS outfit.
GPS: Nick Sykes, Feleti Kaitu’u, Trent Anderson, Louis Wolf, Dan Gorman, Michael Richards, Waita Setu, Mitch King, Nigel Genia, Somi Pulu, Rika Batibasaga, James Herbert, Todd Winkley, Chris Kuridrani, Dan Earley
Coach: Todd Dammers
Sunnybank: Fotuaika Feao, Daniel Anae, Tereina McLean, Colin Cooper, Andrew Gentles, Tuaina Tualima, George Blomfield, Brendan Mitchel, Issak Fines-Leleiwasa, Jake Strachan, Ryan Menzies, Henry Taefu, Fred Dorrough, Jason Beeton, Brando Va’aulu
Coach: Rob Seib
Norths v Brothers
Location: Hugh Courtney Oval
Kick-off: Sunday 3:20pm
It’s the local Northern derby in Round 10 of the Premier Rugby, with Norths hosting Brothers at Hugh Courtney Oval. After a promising start to the 2016 season the Eagles have struggled since returning from the bye, with losses against three of the top four sides. The Brethren will look to continue where they left off in Round 9 after a late second half onslaught handed Brothers a 42-15 victory over Easts. Brothers lead the competitions attacking stats, so defence will be key for Norths if they’re to cause an upset.
Brothers: Francois Postale, Tom Sayer, Dustin Henegan, Terrin Walls, Dave Heneway, Criff Tupou, Charles Freney, Luke Beauchamp, Sam Grasso, Patrick James, Pierce Fitzgerald, Nathanuel Gendle, Elih Baillie, Mitch Felsman, Sam Greene
Coach: Carl Marshall
Norths: Garrath Ryan, Bart Ritchie, Kieran Fitzgibbon, Connor Anderson, Apisai Naiyabo, Jayden Rodwell, Enzo Mutoti, Philip McComber, Nick Chapman, Michael Burke, Alex Gibbon, Logan Tibbetts, Reid Foran, Veresa Mataitini, Logan Tibbetts
Coach: Nick Fogarty
