This weekend, Sunnybank Rugby club will host the inaugural Brisbane Premiership Women's Super Saturday Showdown, which will see all eight women's teams in the competition converge on Oldmac Oval.
With so many players in the one place at the one time, there will be a huge amount of talent on show.
One of those players is promising young University of Queensland scrumhalf Digi Ono.
Ono, a Japanese native, moved to Australia when she was 16 years of age with a very limited understanding of the English Language.
Her involvement in the game of Rugby has been what truly connected Ono with Australian culture, having first played the game when she was 14, back in Japan.
Since moving to Australia, Ono has had success at a variety of levels and has represented Queensland in both XVs and Sevens, as well as featuring in an Australian Talent ID squad.
The scrumhalf is excited about the 2017 season with UQ already registering two impressive victories.
The Red Heavies have become an important part of Ono’s life and she highlights the club’s culture as the reason for their successful start.
“Seeing the club succeed means everything to me. I moved to Australia not knowing a single word of English, but the Red Heavies have not only taught me general Rugby skills, but also helped me understand Australian culture,” she said.
“They are like a second family and when anything good happens to family you are overwhelmed with happiness for them.”
With the Saturday Showdown event only days away, Ono is hopeful of achieving success with her team but is also excited to celebrate women breaking down barriers.
“UQ is a major ambassador of sportsmanship, both on and off the field. We don’t wish for anything else but a healthy hard game of Rugby.
“Being a part of this weekend is a true privilege and I look forward to celebrating with all of the Queensland Women's Rugby community.
“It makes me feel proud to be a part of such an excelling successful national sport.”
Queensland and Australian Women’s Rugby has experienced a lot of success over the past few years and Saturday’s event is the next chapter.
