Coaching Kids aged from Under 6 to Under 12

Rugby Australia has an introductory pathway to the game up to the age of 12 where participants engage in a sequence of modified versions of the game.

Coaches of children in these ages should be focused on providing a fun and engaging environment that keeps the players active while exposing them to the basic skills of the game.

The aim is to create life-long connections to the game for all participants.

So how do I provide the best experience for young players?
#1 Keep them Safe

Safety is one of the major drivers of enjoyment. Rugby Australia's policies and programs are only effective if coaches have knowledge of them, and can appropriately apply them.

Smart Rugby is a mandatory qualification for all coaches of tackle Rugby (Under 8+), but the QRU would encourage all coaches to maintain a current Smart Rugby (updating every 2 years).

#2 Create an enjoyable environment

After completing your Smart Rugby, there are a range of options to supplement your existing skills.

It is important to recognise that every coach will bring different strengths and skills to the job.

  • Professional skills as a manager, teacher, mentor or communicator
  • Personal skills as a parent, an older sibling, or someone who remembers a positive relationship with an adult
  • Elements of character like grit, gratitude, creativity, optimism, bravery, and self-control, that allow us to shine in our role as a coach.

Queensland Rugby can support the development of your knowledge and skills to create an enjoyable, learning environment with the following Rugby Australia courses:

After completing these free online courses there is the opportunity to attend a Coaching Kids Pathway Skills session (Face-to-Face) delivered by the QRU at a cost of $25 pp (or your association or club may sponsor/host a free QRU session) Contact your local Regional Rugby Manager for more information.

#3 Encourage growth in your players by growing yourself
