The BMW Australian Schoolboys side has been named in Sydney today after the conclusion of one of the hardest fought Australian Schools Rugby Union Championships in recent years at St Ignatius’ College, Riverview.

Nine Queenslanders have been selected in the Australian Schoolboys side, while a further seven will feature for the Australian Barbarians.

At the conclusion of the Championship the Australian Schoolboy Selectors named 25 boys to have the honour of being part of the Australian Schoolboys touring squad and the 23 players for the Barbarians to play the inbound Tongan School team.

One extra will be selected for the Australian Schoolboys on August 15.

The Australian Schoolboys tour includes matches against Samoan Schools, Fijian Schools, New Zealand Schools Barbarians and New Zealand Schools this year, continuing one of the longest traditions in Australian Rugby.

Australian Schools Executive Officer Andrew Elliot: “Congratulations to NSW II on their impressive performance on winning the Sebel Australian Schoolboy National Championship and to the players who have been selected in the Australian Schools and Australian Schools Barbarians sides.

“This year saw the coming of age of a number of states highlighting the brilliant work that has been done with Schoolboy Rugby programs around the country. This is only going to benefit the depth of the National Championship in the years to come.”

The BMW Australian Schools Head Coach Pat Langtry: “This year we face a great challenge with a Test matches in the hot and humid conditions of Samoa followed by the cooler New Zealand weather for the Tri Nations in New Zealand against Fiji and New Zealand. As always we know our opponents will be come to the match fully prepared – we will be just as eager and prepared to meet their challenge.

“For some players this will start their Rugby journey in representing their country and we are looking forward to coming together as a larger squad to prepare for the matches ahead.

“The Australian Schoolboys team has a proud history in producing Wallabies and we are proud to be a key part of Australian Rugby pathways in producing our next generation of elite players.”

The BMW Australian Schools Barbarians team will come together for a camp in September with a match at Newington College in Sydney against Tongan Schools on Wednesday September 14.
