Sunnybank have secured their third straight Women’s title with a 24-10 win over Redlands at Oldmac Oval on Saturday night.

The Dragons have not lost a game of Rugby since the 2014 Grand Final, when University of Queensland snatched a 11-10 win.

Since then, they’ve claimed three Brisbane Premiership Women’s titles and the turnout to Oldmac Oval on Saturday afternoon demonstrated how much it means to the club.

Sunnybank Director of Rugby Gaven Head recognised Saturday’s crowd as the the club’s largest for the year.

“The crowd for the Women on Saturday shows there is an appetite for it. They weren’t hidden away on a back field somewhere, everyone knew it was on and everyone was there to watch them,” Head said.

Sunnybank crossed for four tries to Redlands two, with Hana Ngaha, Isabelle Robinson, Yolanda Gittins and Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea crossing the chalk for the home side.

Head Coach Moana Virtue said: “Winning three titles in a row is special. You don’t plan those things; you take it game by game, so we’re lucky to have three titles.”

“The girls worked really hard. It’s been a roller coaster of a year but the girls turn up to training each week and train hard, they really deserve this.

”Virtue also commented on the atmosphere at Oldmac Oval, identifying the support from the Sunnybank men’s sides who showed up to support the undefeated women’s team.

“The support from our boys was amazing. They’ve been there all year for us so it’s no surprise they turned out tonight and were very loud and vocal which is what we love.”

Sunnybank centre Nareta Marsters will travel with the Wallaroos to Dublin tomorrow for the Women’s Rugby World Cup but could hardly voice her excitement with winning the title on Saturday.

“It’s amazing words cannot describe how it feels, it’s so great,” Marsters said.

“We knew Redlands would come hard and they did. We did our job on the park and I guess in that second half Redlands just came at us, it was a tough game.”

Marsters has joined her Wallaroos teammates in Sydney ahead of their flight to Dublin tomorrow.

The Wallaroos tournament kicks off on the 10th of August when they play the host nation, Ireland, on Thursday 10 August, 4:00AM AEST.
